From Survivor to Storyteller

Hannah McNamara is using her voice to change the conversation.

At just 21 years old, Hannah McNamara has already emerged as a force for change in the Mackay and Whitsunday region. As a journalist for Mackay and Whitsunday Life and Core Magazine, Hannah has quickly transitioned from a beginner to a skilled storyteller, using her platform to give a voice to those often unheard. Her passion for storytelling is matched by her courage; as a survivor of sexual violence, she bravely shared her story sending a powerful message that abuse is never acceptable and offering hope to others facing similar struggles.

Hannah's commitment to creating change extends beyond her writing. Through this role, she contributes to initiatives that provide support, raise awareness, and foster healing within the community. Her empathetic nature and ability to capture human resilience resonate in every piece she writes, creating a ripple effect of compassion and understanding.

Hannah's dedication to using her voice for good, both professionally and personally, makes her a beacon of hope and a role model for young women. Her resilience, authenticity, and unwavering commitment to making a difference embody the essence of the Rising Star award. By addressing topics like violence, trauma, and resilience, she fosters empathy and awareness while highlighting paths to healing and support.

In her own words, Hannah emphasises the importance of staying humble, being kind, and connecting with people. She believes in the power of everyday women doing their best to make things happen and encourages the next generation to appreciate the small things in life. She believes that over time, physical beauty will fade but a good heart will last a lifetime. Her journey from trauma to empowerment, from not seeing that life was worth living to being driven by a higher sense of purpose in her faith, inspires others to believe in their power to make a difference.

For Hannah  the guiding principle in every area of life is to "just stay humble, be kind to everybody and really connect with the people around me." It’s a simple yet powerful outlook that has shaped her journey both personally and professionally.

“I think currently with social media, it's easy to get caught up in materialism/riches/fame or popularity even... but what inspired me growing up the most was seeing just every-day women doing their best to make things happen.

“I strongly encourage the next generation of women to look beyond what everyone else is doing and just appreciate the small things in life.

“Beauty fades but a good heart will last a lifetime - and to me, that is the most beautiful and inspiring aspect of life,” she said.

Hannah McNamara's story is a powerful reminder that age is no barrier to meaningful impact. Her work as a journalist and advocate has a profound effect on her community, proving that the future is indeed female.
